When I was in high school, public displays of affection were frowned upon. Warnings against PDA were written in the school handbook that nobody read. You were there to learn, not fall in love. Students with raging hormones were discouraged from playing kissy-face in the halls. Students were highly encouraged to keep their feelings (and hands) to themselves. God does not share the same desire to avoid public displays of affection.  

. . . the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world.

God’s love was made visible. It was not hidden. Manifest means to put on display or to make visible. Think Clark Griswold’s Christmas lights flooding the dark December night sky. 

God’s love for you was displayed for the world to see in the humble form of Jesus. His Son was the ultimate public display of affection.
