A Letter from the Pastor

Dear Christ Point family,

As a Leadership team we want to let you know what we are doing at Christ Point to help our county health officials combat the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) and the anxiety associated with it.

It is important that we remember we that we are not tossed about in a sea of chance. These times may feel unsteady and uncertain, but we know that King Jesus rules over his creation. He is good. He works for our good and His glory. He can be trusted. I’m reminded of the words of the psalmist in Psalm 46:

God is our refuge and strength,

    an ever-present help in trouble.

Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way

    and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,

though its waters roar and foam

    and the mountains quake with their surging

Come and see what the Lord has done,

    the desolations he has brought on the earth….

He makes wars cease

    to the ends of the earth.

He breaks the bow and shatters the spear;

    he burns the shields  with fire.

He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;

    I will be exalted among the nations,

    I will be exalted in the earth.”

The Lord Almighty is with us;

    the God of Jacob is our fortress.

As of Thursday, March 12, Cabarrus County made the decision to suspend the use of their buildings to community groups indefinitely. While we are disappointed, we are not distraught. We are not a building. We never have been. We are a called out people—a community of Jesus followers called to point people to Him. We will be creative, use technology, and be wise and appropriate in the ways we continue to lean in. We see this is a great opportunity to be the church.

I’m grateful for the work our team has done in providing those videos over the last couple of months. Seth, in particular, and our students, Hollister and Noah, have worked to make that tool available.

As the church we never want to respond to uncertainty with fear, we do want to be a church known for deep compassion and good citizenship. It’s in that spirit that we are following the health department’s recommendation and those in authority over us. We believe this is a Christ-like, sacrificial way to show that we love the most vulnerable in our community above ourselves.

There is a great line in the movie Gladiator (yes, I’m quoting Gladiator) when Maximus is waiting for the gates of the colosseum to open, not knowing what awaits him. He says to his fellow gladiators, “Whatever comes out of these gates, we’ve got a better chance of survival if we work together. Do you understand? If we stay together we survive.” I always thought, “That is true of Christian community!” We stay together. So, be wise, but don’t isolate. Stay connected. Remember your brothers and sisters. Call, text, and write an email. Press in. Remember, we’re better together.
